CBN is what aging cannabis makes as THC breaks down, and the cannabinoid most often sold for sleep. That reputation is the honest problem: the one trial that measured sleep objectively did not find the effect. CBN is worth understanding precisely because so much is claimed for it and so little has been shown.

Where it stands legally

None. No FDA/EMA approval. CBN is an oxidative breakdown product of THC. It accumulates as cannabis ages, which is the historical root of its (unproven) "sleepy" reputation.

Ranked by how much each finding can actually tell you, strongest first. A trial in people outranks a study in cells, including when the answer is no.

Human study

On its own, did not make people drowsy

A proven sleep aid, "the sleep cannabinoid"

The only trial using objective sleep measurement (polysomnography) missed its primary endpoint (Lavender 2026, PMID 41698831). A larger nightly-dose trial also missed its primary sleep-quality endpoint and adding CBD did not help (Bonn-Miller 2024, PMID 37796540, manufacturer-funded). It’s what makes aged cannabis sedating

Old cannabis has more CBN, but isolated CBN did not sedate people. The "indica couch-lock is CBN" story has never been demonstrated. Consumer products also typically dose ≤5 mg, far below the 20–100 mg used in the trials that showed even a weak signal.
